Catholic Priest Molestation Cases
The Roman Catholic Church has become the center of religious sexual abuse scandals during the last few years. Thousands of people across the country say that they were molested by Catholic priests, and there is evidence that the Church failed to protect many children from known sexual predators.
Sexual abuse in the Catholic Church is not a new issue. According to an audit commissioned by the St. Joseph Province of the Capuchin Order, sexual abuse by friars was a problem addressed in its meetings as far back as 1932, the earliest year for which minutes were available.
Auditors indicated that one of the problems persistent in church records was the use of code words to hide the actions of pedophiles. Friars who were child molesters were said to have issues with "immorality" or "evil actions" and were sometimes recorded as being sent to programs such as alcohol treatment when sexual abuse was clearly the problem.
Additionally, auditors found that the Capuchins also violated internal church rules by failing to report sexual abuse cases to authorities.
The Capuchins are one of many Catholic organizations accused of covering up a sexual abuse and failing to protect youth from sexual assaults by priests. The Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph has also been sued several times by victims of priest sex abuse. In 2008, the diocese made a $10 million settlement with 47 sexual abuse plaintiffs.
The diocese reached another $2.25 million settlement in 2013 with the parents of an Independence boy who killed himself in 1983 after being repeatedly abused by a priest. The Kansas City Star reports that this was the largest settlement that the diocese has paid for a single abuse lawsuit. The boy's parents alleged that a priest molested their son along with three other boys at the Nativity of Mary Church in Independence.
