Sports Coach Sexual Assault Attorneys
Sports coaches are among the most influential groups of mentors to children across Missouri. Participation in group sporting events can develop important skills such as teamwork, self-discipline and healthy exercise habits.
Although the vast majority of Missouri children will experience significant benefits from participating in sporting events, some children are sexually abused by their coaches. Although every sexual abuse victim displays different side effects, many sexually abused children will develop depression, anxiety, aggression or other mental health issues that require years of treatment.
The Missouri law firm of Humphrey Farrington & McClain, P.C., handles sexual abuse cases involving youth athletics. Since 1984, we have represented people across the country who have been injured by the negligence or intentional misconduct of others. If you or your child has been sexually assaulted by a youth sports coach, contact us online or call 888-353-0491 to arrange a free consultation.
USA Swimming Sexual Assault Cases
The USA Swimming organization has been sued for several sexual assault and child pornography cases in recent years. In a special investigative report, ABC News detailed at least 36 USA Swimming coaches who have been banned from the organization because of sexual misconduct.
News programs such as 20/20 and World News with Diane Sawyer reported incidents of USA Swimming coaches fondling and abusing dozens of swimmers. One coach from Indiana even secretly taped young girls showering.
The USA Swimming cases have resulted in several criminal convictions and civil lawsuits. Parents say they were outraged to learn that some child predators were able to move from town to town, continually obtaining coaching positions to molest young swimmers. Lawyers suing the organization have accused it of conducting "willfully incomplete" background checks and allowing child predators to gain easy access to children.
Signs That A Youth Athlete Is Being Molested
There are many warning signs that a youth athlete is being sexually assaulted by a coach. Although any one sign doesn't mean that sexual abuse is happening, the Child Sex Abuse Prevention and Protection Center recommends that parents seek help when children begin to exhibit several signs of abuse.
Youth athletes may exhibit many types of behavioral changes after a sexual assault including:
- Changing eating habits
- Night terrors
- Sudden, unexplained access to money, toys or gifts
- Self esteem issues
- Adult-like sexual behaviors or knowledge
- Sudden mood swings
- Prompting conversation about sexual issues
- Developing a new fear of certain people or places
- Sexual promiscuity
- Alcohol or drug use
It is important to remember that every child reacts to sexual abuse differently and that other stressful events can trigger similar behavioral changes.
