Recall Information Resource Links

Consumers injured by products are often unaware that the product that caused their injury was subject to a government recall. Manufacturers often do not do enough to advertise their recalls and the issuance of a recall does not preclude a customer from filing a product liability claim if he or she is injured by a defective product.

Many government agencies are responsible for overseeing recalls, including:

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
  • The U.S. Coast Guard
  • The Food and Drug Administration
  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

The ability of each agency to enforce recalls varies and recalls can also be independently initiated by manufacturers. Below are some links to the most helpful websites for learning more about product recalls and product liability law.

This website is a service of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. It provides timely information on all U.S. government recalls. It is often easiest to start your search for a recalled item here.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission

The CPSC is a government agency charged with informing and protecting the public from hazardous consumer products. The agency oversees products that pose potential electrical, fire, chemical or mechanical hazards, as well as products that may injure children. The CPSC website offers a variety of resources, including consumer product safety statistics and recall information.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration

The FDA is a division of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services that is tasked with protecting users of a variety of products, including foods, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics, radiation-emitting products and tobacco. The FDA website includes safety alerts, recalls and warning letters to companies.

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Household Product Database

The HHS Household Products Database is a valuable resource to determine the health effects associated with thousands of products in and around your home, including glues, bleach, herbicide and hair spray. This is an excellent place to find out more information on products that may be subject to recalls in the future.

FindLaw's Product Liability Portal

FindLaw is the leading provider of free legal information. FindLaw's product liability pages have extensive information on a variety of dangerous products, including medical devices, pharmaceuticals and defective toys.
